U13 A boys v Merchiston and Loretto

Having lost the last few week’s fixtures to weather and Covid the boys were absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to get their teeth into some competition. A triangular match was on the cards and having already played both of these teams it was an opportunity to measure our progress over the term. It was a cold dark afternoon and after a solid warm up we were ready to go!
First up we had Loretto and we started the game well. The ball was slippery but we managed to move it around well and challenge the opposition defences. After some excellent line breaks we scored our first try in the corner. We continued to put pressure on Loretto and ran in 3 more excellent tries winning the game comfortably. I was delighted with the boys as this was some of the best rugby we had played all year.
In the second game against Merchiston we were looking to carry some of the momentum from the last match. We were up against a strong, well drilled team and struggled to break through their solid defence. We were second best at the breakdown and struggled to retain possession. The weather was getting worse and the boys gave everything but ultimately were up against a better team.

I was chuffed with the boys today and I’ve been so proud of their efforts over the course of the term.

Player of the match – Blair and Fred. who gave 100% throughout. Fred’s carries and tackling were very important. Blair controlled the game superbly from 9 and worked extremely hard at the breakdown.
