U11B Rugby v Belhaven U1B

The U11’s hit the road on Wednesday this time journeying to Belhaven alongside our A’s. The weather again was very much in our favour, dry and bright, which allowed the match flow end to end with the dry ball.
Perhaps the journey didn’t help us as we conceded a trio of early tries before we got into our stride. However, once we managed to do this we actually played some nice rugby and pulled it back to 3-4. Defensively our tackling was becoming more secure as the half went along, but we still allowed tries to be scored against us that the players themselves felt we could have prevented. But it’s good to see the boys work so hard at it on games days so we will improve. Play ebbed and flowed for the remainder of the half which ended with the hosts being a few tries ahead.
Ball in hand we played some skillful rugby and scored some pleasing tries as we passed ball out to the edges to find space. Offloads out the tackle and pop passes from the ground also allowed us to maintain possession and make progress up the pitch. St. Marys more than doubled their try count 2nd half, and it was in the main down to these excellent running, supporting and offloading skills. Belhaven themselves though were not to be outdone and continued at a steady rate of adding further tries to their total.
Our boys did tire a little towards the end of the 2nd twenty-minute spell as we had no subs to come on and help take the strain, but they are to be praised for trying hard to the end against a good home team who ran out comfortable winners in the end. Thank you to Belhaven for hosting us so well and making us feel so welcome. Next week will be a Festival at Merchiston so we look forward to that.
