1st VIII v Earlston High School

The squad: Olivia (c), Zara, Lily T, Beattie, Charlotte, Emily, Bea, Jemima & Mathilda
Earlston 2, St. Mary’s 2

We couldn’t have hoped for a better afternoon for today’s match. Lovely bright, clear skies and although it became chilly, conditions for hockey were super.
From the first whistle it was apparent that the two sides were very well matched. Defensively, Earlston were strong, as were we and both sides carried considerable threat going forwards. We tended to crowd the ball rather than utilise the width of the pitch and as such, possession was regularly lost and won.
It was us who struck first, at the tail end of the first half. Jemima was in the right place at the right time and tapped home a cross from Olivia. Early on in the second half, Earlston scored a good goal courtesy of a lovely strike which gave Beattie in goal, no chance. Mathilda then made her debut for the 1sts whereupon she scored our second of the afternoon, again thanks to good positional awareness, but shortly afterwards, Earlston were awarded a penalty corner and scored from that.

So the game finished 2-2 which was probably a fair reflection of the game. Could / should we have won it? Yes, but there again, we might easily have come second too! Well done to all the girls.

Olivia: a super game. Very effective up front. Try to be more central and attack from head on.
Jemima: good work rate and some good stick skills. Lift your head more and off load quicker.
Bea: some dazzling skills on show. Try to move the ball more when confronting a defender.
Emily: worked hard today. Be strong on the ball. Keep it close and protect it when needing support.
Charlotte: some good runs today. Be strong on the ball. When you have it, protect it!
Mathilda: thank you for helping us today. You played really well; a great goal too!
Lily: strong and resilient. You must clear the ball wide – look for space in wide areas.
Zara: you too must clear the ball wide. Don’t cut back in. Utilise wide areas. Call your midfield back!
Beattie: great game. Some excellent saves. Quick off the line too. Instrumental in getting a result.
