U11B Rugby v Pringle House, Merchiston Castle
On Wednesday afternoon, the U11Bs headed up to Merchiston Castle’s Pringle House for their first fixture in many months.
It had been a long wait and we were all delighted that the weather matched the occasion with glorious sunshine over the city campus.
Playing 6-a-side tag rugby, we fronted up to a large Merchiston squad with Fergus R, Harris, John, Hector J and Lawrence captained by F6 stalwart Lewis.
The game kicked off and Fergus R received the pass before jinking and dancing through a throng of prospective Merchie tacklers to dot down far and left – SCORCHIO!!
The Pringle boys quickly responded setting up a seesaw tussle as the lead alternated almost with every play. Every boy played their part with Harris tackling well out wide, Hector used his pace to score in both corners and John, Lewis and Lawrence tirelessly harassing the Merchiston players (with and without the ball).
The half ended with the scores tied but it was in the second period that St. Mary’s really pulled things together. They used the touchline as an extra defender and repeatedly forced the Pringle attackers over it, guaranteeing a turnover. Moreover, they strung together three separate densive sets of 6 tackles – winning an automatic turnover each time.
Most pleasing from this old coach’s viewpoint was the way that they quickly formed a defensive line both in attack and defence and used their quicker organisation to score some super tries.
Final Score: St. Mary’s U11B 15 – 12 Merchiston Castle Pringle House U11B
