1st XI v Belhaven

Wednesday 2nd June 2021

1st XI team 2nd June 2021 jb

The 1st XI: John I, Josh C, Ollie dG, Henry S, Isaac B, Tristan B, Fergus Y, Lochie M-C, Nic J, Ewan G. & Blair A.

With our recent spell of fabulous weather, the uncertainty of last Wednesday’s fixture seemed an age away. Sunhats, sun cream and drinks breaks were the order of the day today!

John lost the toss but we were asked to bat first. Fergus & Josh once again opened the batting for their team and yet again, they got their side off to a steady start. I was pleased to see them running well between the wickets, perhaps riding their luck at times! Josh was bowled in the 4th over on 6, whereupon John came to the crease. He and Fergus kept the run rate ticking along nicely until Fergus was bowled on 11. Ollie came to the crease and was looking confident but was bowled by a cracking delivery. As he trundled back to the pavilion, a mallard was heard overhead! John (18) played some lovely shots and probably regrets not having a look at the change of bowler before trying to hit his first ball back over his head! Isaac and Henry also continued to keep the scorers busy. Henry (4) was run out courtesy of a direct hit and unfortunately before finding form but Isaac hung around and proved a bit of a thorn in their side! He and Nic kept things moving, Isaac ended up with 17 and Nic with 10. Tristan & Blair were both dismissed in consecutive balls and neither added to the team’s total! Lochie added 4 which left Ewan and Nic to finish the innings. They ran well and added a few vital extras but Nic’s wicket was the last to fall. All that meant that we had set Belhaven a target of 94.

John and Ollie opened the bowling and although their bowling was tight, the Belhaven openers played some lovely shots and got their team off to a good start.

It took us until the 5th over to get our first wicket, off the bowling of John, a really good catch by Blair at deep point. John took a super catch low to his right off his own bowling to dismiss their other opener and when Josh started his spell, his line and length was rewarded with three quick wickets; a lovely catch by Tristan at square leg, an edge taken by John, then behind the stumps and his third wicket was bowled. The sense of ‘we can win this’ was palpable and the boys continued to sharpen their act and apply pressure. Ollie and Isaac both bowled well and certainly didn’t make it easy for our visitors. However, with 5 wickets down, a couple of big hitters saw Belhaven over the line, with a couple of overs to spare. Had we managed an extra 25, perhaps 30 runs and taken a couple of vital chances during the game, today’s match really could have gone the other way; small margins!

I was delighted once again with the conduct of the boys both on and off the field. Their belief in their own ability I hope has been given a deserved boost and should serve them well ahead of our next game against Loretto after half term. Great improvement from last week! Well done to you all and thank you to Mr Key for your support. Also, a special mention to Mr Brydon for preparing a super wicket.

Mr P.
