1st cricket v Mowden 26 May 21

Excitement was palpable in the days leading up to today’s cricket fixture, so the weather forecast did nothing to ease the tension! Had Mowden not had the facility to cover their wicket, there would have been little hope of playing the game. However, we left the decision to the last possible minute and jumped at the chance when the game was given the green light.

John lost the toss but was asked to bat and Fergus & Josh opened the innings. They both got off to a steady start, playing some lovely shots and both batsmen looked comfortable. Fergus (4) was the first to lose his wicket, run out courtesy of a super throw from the boundary. Josh (4) followed soon after, playing around a straight ball. John (6) in at three also looked at ease at the wicket until he pulled a straight full toss and was caught on the boundary. Ollie also played around a straight ball, without troubling the scorers! Henry and Isaac then steadied the ship and both batted really well. They defended resolutely and punished the loose deliveries and got the score board ticking along nicely. Henry (12) was caught at point and Isaac (10) was bowled and their dismissal brought Tristan (9) and Blair (2) to the crease. They both showed promise and ran well between the wickets, as did both Lochie (4) and Nic (3) when they were called upon. The last wicket fell in the 20th over having set our hosts 60 to win.

In reply, John and Ollie opened the bowling. The opening batsmen struggled initially with the pace of John and the accuracy of Ollie and it was edges that got their run chase moving. Ollie’s consistency paid off and he bowled their opener in the 4th over. Isaac and Josh also turned their arm and bowled fairly well but by this time the Mowden batsman had got their eyes in and anything short of a length or wide was dealt with!

Defending such a small total was always going to be tough but there were many positives to take away. The boys’ conduct on and off the field was exemplary.

Our fielding was good, Blair in particular and above all, we had a game of cricket! Quite a moment, the first in exactly 23 months! So, although we came away second, we had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, we stayed dry, all bar a shower at the close and once again we were well looked after, as much as Covid would allow!

Next week we welcome Belhaven to St. Mary’s – any help organising warm, breezy conditions, much appreciated!

Mr P.
