1st VIII Football v Loretto

Loretto were our guests at St. Mary’s for our final football match before half term. We had an unchanged team and the boys were feeling confident and keen to get going.

The game began and both teams were a little loose with possession with lots of stray passes and turnovers. We were on the big pitch down the back so there was plenty of space for both teams to move the ball around. During a momentary lack of focus Loretto were able to put in a long ball through our defence to put a striker in. He slotted the ball into the net to open the scoring. Our lads responded well and sured up at the back and began to get in behind with clever runs and passes. John T. equalised after a superb first time finish following a fine pass from midfield. Half time 1-1.

In the second half we were slightly guilty of taking our foot off the gas and allowed Loretto too much time and space in our half. They put us under continued pressure and added 3 more goals to their tally despite several fine stops from Isaac in goal. To their credit our lads fought back and scored a brilliant goal from a free kick just outside the Loretto box. A fine ball across goal was prodded home by Josh to make it 4-2. Unfortunately, we ran out of steam in the closing few minutes conceding a couple more goals. Plenty of positives to take from the match but I think the boys can improve their work rate across the whole game.

Score -  Loretto 6 - 2 St. Mary’s
Scorers – John T., Josh

Man of the matchJohn T. – with a goal and an assist he was always stretching the opposition with good runs and worked well in defence.
