St. Mary's U11b v Mowden U11B

29th Jan 2020

The U11 B’s welcomed Mowden to the school on Wednesday for an 8 a side match which was played in pretty awful conditions as the cold wind blew strongly and the rain poured. St. Marys elected to take the wind behind their backs, and Mowden kicked off.

The wind was going to be a factor and a challenge to all the boys, but they did well in trying to keep the ball down when against it. St. Marys had early pressure and came close on a couple of occasions but the Mowden keeper was more than able. However, Fergus Y did open the scoring through a good on target shot which a deflection took into the far corner. Soon after the same player had another shot saved, but Rory C was alert and shot the rebound in to add a second. St. Marys were keeping their shape better and looking to make a pass and use some width. Mowden though had moments of their own but were finding goalie Hector C in good form. When Mowden broke they found Charlie F and Barney O solidly tackling and clearing at the back. Then after some good lead up play Fergus Y took another shot which was well saved, but this time it was William E who was on hand to push it home. The same player added a fourth after Finlay B and Callum B had combined well in the lead up play. In a scoring mood now, William E added another on halftime after a fine dribble and shot at the end.

The 2nd half saw St. Marys add to their total right from the kick off, this time Rory C with his 2nd after a good Fergus Y pass. Mowden then had a good patch and produced several shots on goal, but just couldn’t get past Hector C in goal. One fine save really sticks in the memory when a great shot looked top corner bound until Hector dived full length to claw it away safe! Right after this, Fergus Y added further to the score which Mowden perhaps didn’t deserve on the run of play at that moment. As the half progressed both teams had chances. Finlay B and Callum B in mid field continued to spread play well. Callum B went into goal now to relieve Hector and Hector tackled well. The cold was taking its grip on all now, but not before Barney O had added our final goal. To their credit Mowden kept at it and were finally rewarded when they had better fortune in front of goal and scored. Well to all boys who deserved a big well done for staying with it in such cold conditions.
