1st VIII Football v Merchiston

 Wednesday 22nd Jan

On Wednesday we welcomed Merchiston to St. Mary’s for a 1st team football match and excited to have our first match out on the front field. It was a dry day with good conditions for a game. The team had worked hard during the week on their passing and ability to find space.

The game started quickly and both teams had a good share of the ball during the opening exchanges. Merchiston had a well skilled group and moved the ball well creating good chances for us to defend, we had chances of our own but struggled to get the shot away at the end of them. Merchiston scored a few goals in the first half but we were still in it.

In the second half we started well and managed to create space in the wide channels and putting good balls into the box. Again we just lacked that finishing touch to get the reward for our possession. Unfortunately we leaked a couple more goals despite some impressive defending and saves form Isaac. John won a penalty late on but was unable to convert from the spot. However, moments later Merchiston handled the ball in the box and gave us another chance. This time Ollie dG converted but unfortunately it was no more than a consolation. Despite the score line the boys worked hard throughout and never gave up. Plenty to work on and we look forward to next week and another shot at it.

Score -  Merchiston 5 - 1 St. Mary’s
Scorers – Ollie dG

Man of the matchJohn I., who communicated extremely well at the back and pushed forward with real purpose when he got the opportunity.
