Having battled through Northumbrian torrents back in December en route to Mowden for our annual hockey fixture, today you might have thought it was summer! Not quite shirt sleeves, but a balmy 11 degrees in the Tyne Valley complimented the warm welcome we received, as always.

What a fabulous match we had too. Closely contested in every quarter, the game ebbed and flowed, with every goal being matched by the opposition. Arguably we had the stronger start and edged ahead in the opening minutes but soon found ourselves chasing the game. Willa and Kiki had super starts as GK & GD and the Mowden attack found it increasingly difficult to find the Mowden GA or GS. At the other end both Tiggy and Iona shot really well, probably hitting an impressive 80% between them.

By half time the score was 13 - 13, at which point the girls began to realise every move mattered and every shot counted. The added pressure resulted in some looser passes from both teams and the game became even more end to end. Freya, Elena, Emma and Daisy worked really well together. Centre passes were slick and on most occasions the ball found its way to the business end within two or three passes. Mowden’s set pieces were also very effective and both teams notched up an impressive number of goals.

We entered the final period 19 - 18 to the good so the game was very much in the balance. However, how fitting that it finished honours even. Testament to the superb work rates from both sets of girls, to the brilliant shooting from all shooters and befitting to the lovely atmosphere of the afternoon. At the end of play the girls’ wanted to award ‘Player of the Game.’ We nominated the Mowden GK for her superb defending and it was Iona who won our ‘Player’ award for her impressive shooting.

A huge thank you to the staff and girls at Mowden for making us feel so welcome and congratulations once again to the girls for another super performance. Next week we travel to Belhaven for a 1430 start.
