1st VII Netball v Cargilfield

The squad
: Willa, Kiki (C), Elena, Freyja, Emma, Tiggy & Iona
St. Mary’s 13, Cargilfield 13

A blustery and bracing start to the new season! Today’s strong winds coupled with numb fingers made for challenging conditions but our first game of the season was extremely well fought and ended an honourable draw.

Kiki’s team started the faster of the two teams. Some superb linking, passing and movement off the ball, saw us race into a 3 goal advantage within the opening couple of minutes. Indeed we kept the lead throughout the first quarter which finished 5 – 3. We were slightly more careless with possession in the second period of play and although Iona and Tiggy both continued to shoot really well, Cargilfield got themselves back into the game, winning the quarter 6 – 4 and so levelling the scores at 11 – 11 at half time.

Kiki, Willa and Elena were coming under increasing pressure and had to work hard to mark closely and do their best to restrict the Cargilfield shooters. Having chased the game in the second quarter, they were ahead of their opposition in the 3rd and made life pleasingly tricky for them! Freyja and Emma were also both marking dynamic and agile players but did extremely well both in possession  and when defending. Vital passes were intercepted and their distribution was good. Iona and Tiggy’s movement around their zones was electric! They both worked really hard and shot well too. The combination of all the above kept us in the running throughout and I thought the game was tipping in our favour. One or two loose passes started to creep into our game which I hope will improve with experience but the girls thoroughly deserved not to lose this one.

So, a good start to the new campaign. Next week we travel to Mowden for a 1430
