1st XIII Rugby v Fettes

 Decembar 4th 2019

In the final game of 2019 our lads were up against a strong, well drilled Fettes side who we had faced earlier in the season. We knew they had some big threats but were confident in our ability to play expansive rugby and have a real go. We started the game without two of our boys due to the sickness bug going around but we were determined to not let this affect us.
The game began and we were straight into our stride, moving the ball well side to side and keeping the ball by rucking effectively. Fettes showed some resolute defense and we couldn’t get over the line. A loose pass and a turnover ball led to Fettes opening the scoring with a breakaway try. The lads weren’t fazed and knew we had to keep up the pressure and cut out the mistakes in the opponent’s half. We unfortunately lost Tristan to injury after a heavy collision and the boys knew they would need to step up to fill his boots. Again we missed that killer instinct to get over the line and once Fettes got the ball into their big pacey center’s hands he was very hard to stop. The boys were staring down the barrel, roll over and give up or roll their sleeves up and go to work for each other. To their credit the boys did the later and we came right back at Fettes scoring 2 good tries before half time.
In the second half we showed real character and fought hard for one another in all aspects of the game. We leaked a couple more scores to turnover ball but managed a very cheeky score ourselves after a gap was left around the ruck.

In tough conditions I am hugely proud of this group of lads as they never give up and are constantly improving. Onwards and upwards.

Score : St. Mary’s 28 – Fettes 41
Scorers : John T. (x3), Ed
Man of the matchJosh, whose bravery was a sight to behold. Crunching tackles to stop certain tries and a constant threat with ball in hand were a highlight for us all.
