St. Mary's U9 Rugby v Fettes

 Wednesday 4th Dec

This weeks Under 9s match against in Edinburgh against Fettes was a very interesting game indeed, there is an old saying “a game of two halves” and you could certainly say that about this game. It was only a few weeks ago that I had the pleasure of watching what had to be one of the best Under 9 rugby games I had seen in a long time, so I found it hard to believe that this same squad of boys could put in such a disappointing performance in the first half of this match. Fettes scored first with St Marys responding straight from the restart, then the pattern of the game went every time St Marys scored Fettes responded by scoring two, this was mainly down to poor defence from St Marys and we were very fortunate to be only 8 – 4 down at half time.

At the half time team talk it was not hard for the players to identify what areas of their performance they would have to work on in the second half if they were to take anything from this game, basically “Everything”. Tackling, communication, support play, speed and more ! The second period started with St Marys camped on Fettes try line and had it not been for some sound tackling by Fettes St Marys would have scored sooner. The second half was totally different from the first with St Marys realising that they could possibly turn this game around, with some good strong straight running and support play  St Marys scored two more tries before Fettes got back into the game. End to end play with good tackling and strong running from both sides the scores were even at 5 all for the second period making the overall score 13 – 9 to Fettes, if the St Marys boys had played the first half as they did the second they may just have come away with a win. Overall a good term of rugby well done to all the players and parents who came along and supported the boys.
