2nds Hockey v Mowden Hall

 Wednesday 27th November
Mowden 4, St. Mary’s 4
A succession of road works and log wagons did their best to delay our arrival this afternoon, so much so that the 2nds girls were denied much time to warm up. It was no surprise therefore that they took time to get going but somewhat frustrating that they were three goals down within the opening five minutes!
As the first half unfolded, we began to claw our way back into the game. Daisy made some super runs, Emily, Lara, Mabel and Anna began to show what they can do with the ball and Cadence and Willa found their form and became much stronger at the back. For a while Lily in goal became a by stander but I was really pleased that the girls didn’t panic, they just maintained their structure and started to pass the ball as I know they can.
Momentum started to swing in our favour, largely due to the girl’s superb work rate and by half time, the score was level at 3-3. Some honest words during the half time break spurred the girls on still further and when they took the lead, it was nothing less than they deserved. As the game ran into its final stages, Mowden were awarded a short corner which we were slow to defend and our hosts scored the equaliser.
So the game finished honours even at 4-4; arguably a fair result, but I was left thinking that a few less log wagons and a different decision at Northumberland County Council HQ to dig up quite as much road this week, may well have facilitated a sharper start, in both senses of the phrase.
Next week Riley venture down to the Borders for what will be our final encounter of 2019. Well done today to the girls from both schools. You endured some pretty torrid conditions, without fuss and ended up playing some lovely hockey.
