1st XIII Rugby v Craigclowan

Wednesday 27th Nov

The St. Mary’s boys were riding high after a run of fantastic performances and results in recent weeks. We were excited and confident going into the match and were up against a Craigclowan team with a large size advantage.

On a wet and muddy pitch the match got underway. We started well and showed great handling ability in tricky conditions. We spent the opening moments of the game camped out deep in the opposition half but came up against some resolute defence. Unable to cross the line we coughed up possession letting them off the hook. A loose kick and a good chase brought them into our half and after several direct carries they crossed our line for the first score. The boys picked themselves up and forced their way back into the game with our usual width and accurate breakdown work. We were reward with a clever score down the blind side. With the scores level we continued to press deep in their half. Unfortunately a few missed tackles led to Craigclowan’s second score as they broke up the pitch well. At half time we knew we were in it and just had to keep playing and the scores would come.

Early in the second half we lost a few key individuals to injury and despite our best efforts struggled to get that crucial second score. Craigclowan added another score and in the end, despite dominating for most of the game, we were on the losing side.

The boys can be very proud of their performance against a side far larger than them and playing some excellent rugby throughout the match. Well done lads and bring on the next one.
