U11 B and C vs Compass

The U11 B’s and C’s welcomed Compass to St. Marys on Wednesday for an 8 a side triangular. The Autumn rains were taking their toll as conditions underfoot were now a little softer than previous weeks. However, with a dry afternoon and no real wind to speak of, playing conditions were still good.

This week the C’s started off proceedings against Compass. After a slow start, and going two tries down, the C’s started to go through the gears. Both teams did well in their attempts to put the ball through the hands despite the mud. Defenses at times were a little lax and tries came for both teams. St. Marys got matters back to 2-3 before the Compass strong runners combined well to regain the two try gap. Our boys again pulled one back, but in the last play we couldn’t quite turn possession into a levelling try as Compass defended it well. But overall, a close and entertaining match.

This week as compass needed to depart sharply, our visitors also played in the next match against our B’s. Again both teams looked to mix up the method of testing defenses by looking to the strong runners to carry ball forward and also moving the ball out wide to out flank. It turned into a tight match as although St Mary’s were never behind there was only ever one try in it. Although there were lapses both teams generally defended well. This week we really improved our ability to get the ball out wide quickly but with an accuracy that resulted in 2 tries being scored. In the end our B’s ran out being scored by 3-2 but again it proved to be a tight and entertaining game.

As Compass made their way back up to the school, our B’s and C’s played a quick game which resulted in a creditable draw as both teams displayed the same passion and commitment to each other! Next week we are home to Belhaven for both B’s and C’s.
