St. Mary's  U11 b and C vs Belhaven Hill

13th Nov

This week saw the visit of Belhaven to St. Marys on Wednesday to play our B & C teams. With yet more rain this week, ground conditions were quite soft. This, alongside there being a bitterly cold air, affected handling. First up were the B’s of both schools for the first half.

St Marys actually started quite brightly and had good possession. After some phases this enabled us to breakthrough a gap to score the first try. However, Belhaven settled, and with more possession themselves now they tested our defense with their big and powerful ball carriers. As a result, they ran up 3 tries with this effective tactic as we struggled to cope with it.

Our boys to their credit though did start to cope and looked to stop the runners at source. We in fact pulled a nice try back to close the gap. But then Belhaven went back to their strength of utilizing their big carriers even more. Although tackles from St. Marys were going in, we found it difficult to put them down to ground and so they could offload to their support runners. Two tries followed for our visitors, but again we hit back with one before no side was sounded.

The second half saw our C’s now come on to take on the Belhaven B’s. This mini match followed in a similar vein to our B match. We started well, in fact we should have scored as we pounded right on the line. But good defense and a little too much individual excitement saw St. Marys give up the opportunity. Stung by this Belhaven came right back and scored 3 tries as they resorted to type of using their big ball carrying boys who inflicted damage as we sought to counter it. We gradually adapted and improved our tackling to stem the tide. We even scored a nice try with a good run up the right wing after we had swung play left. Belhaven though immediately retaliated just to snuff out any St. Mary thoughts of a comeback as their biggest ball carrier swept all before him as he tanked through our ranks to score the final try of the afternoon.
Well done to all 3 teams who tried to play to the best of their abilities and not let the freezing conditions spoil their fun. Well done to our boys who gave it their all, but just lacked some physical presence this time. Next week there is an A and B team away to Ardvreck.
