1st XIII Match Report vs Hall Grove

8th November 2019

Hall Grove 8th Nov 19

Last week we welcomed a touring school from London to St. Mary’s to play us as part of their Scottish Rugby tour. The boys were delighted to have the extra fixture and what’s more they had the pleasure of playing on the brand new pitch at the Greenyards. After our win earlier in the week the lads were keen to get stuck in and put in another good performance.

The game got off to a flying start as we managed to secure the ball and ship it out wide on the big pitch to score under the sticks. Again defence was where we excelled and the boys worked very well as a team to ensure we had numbers on our feet to make all the tackles and stop them getting through our line. We continued to move the ball around the pitch and display good handling skills across the whole team, despite the wet conditions. After some charging runs and excellent work at the breakdown we added to our total with 2 more scores. Our visitors had some big runners and offloaded the ball well but our lads really fronted up and made tackle after tackle.

The breakdown was an area we had focussed on before the game and we were able to secure possession well giving our backs time and space.

This was a fabulous opportunity to play a competitive fixture against a good touring side. The boys have begun to play with more belief and confidence and this was really evident in this match.

Well done lads, keep it up.
Man of the Match – George, who put in countless tackles and led from the front throughout with and without the ball.
