1st XIII Rugby v Mowden Hall

We welcomed Mowden Hall to St. Mary’s this week for only our second home fixture of the season. The boys had trained really well and knew we needed to believe in ourselves from the start to give ourselves a chance of winning the match. Mowden were a big side and the boys knew the game would be decided up front.

The match began well and we had the ball in their half stringing multiple phases together. We were rewarded with the opening score after some superb rucking by our forwards. Mowden played very direct and forced our boys to do a lot of tackling, but they did so happily. Excellent tackling saw their big runners become frustrated and mistakes were forced. A few great breaks led to our second score and our tails going up. The boys continued to display brilliant tackling and breakdown work and ran with the ball to great effect. Two more tries followed as our confidence grew and we led 28-5. We allowed them back into the game however, after a lull in our concentration they managed a score twice bringing the scores to 28-19. The boys steadied the ship, led superbly by the group of Form 8s, and pushed on with a fifth and final score just before the end.

This was a brilliant match and a result that the boys all thoroughly deserved. I hope we can carry this confidence into the rest of the season.

Well done boys.

Man of the Match – Josh, who defended superbly and returned the ball with devastating effect from fullback.
