Ardvreck Rugby 7s

Sunday 3rd October 2019

The boys arrived up in Ardvreck on a cold and wet Sunday for an exciting day of 7s. We were drawn in a pool with Mowden Hall and Fettes.

We had Fettes up first and we had a characteristic slow start letting in an early score. The boys reacted really well and played some really nice 7s moving the ball side to side and challenging their defence in the wide channels. We pulled the scores level at 12-12 and were pushing for the winner. Unfortunately, in the last play Fettes scored a winner and we went down 17-12.

Next up we had Mowden Hall and we were aiming to start well and display some belief in our ability from early on in the game. We defended well but again leaked a cheap score and were chasing the game. We scored a good try in the second half to level the scores and looked confident with the ball in hand. However, time was not on our side and the match ended 7-7.

Up next we had the Cup quarter final against a very strong Merchiston side. We were starved of possession early on and couldn’t keep a hold of the ball when we did have it. We had a few good chances to score in the second half but weren’t able to get over the line. In the end we were well beaten but the boys showed a never say die attitude and never gave up.

Losing quarter finalists then went into a charity Semi-final and we were up against Bellhaven. The boys were well up for this match and had to defend for most of the first half. Our defence was superb and we rebuffed their attacks over and over again. The game opened up and both teams had good chances to score but neither could breech the others defence. As the boys tired Bellhaven squeezed a late score in the corner to take the game 5-0.

I was delighted with the effort shown by all of the boys in the squad. We gave a good account of ourselves and never gave up. I hope the boys can take confidence from their performance and have belief going forward in future fixtures.
Squad – John T., Ted, Geordie, George, Mitchell, Ed, Oliver L., Tristan, Josh, John I.
