1st VIII Hockey v Dollar Academy

Dollar 5, St. Mary’s 3

hockey 1st V111 V dollar 2 Oct

With our sails still billowing from Sunday’s success at the Loretto tournament, we cast off for Dollar this afternoon knowing it would be a tough game but with confidence levels high. We arrived to a pitch bathed in sunshine and a sky without a blemish. Despite a rigorous warm up, the effects of the long drive were still lingering when the whistle went and I knew the girls were going to need to be at their best.

We quickly got to speed with the game and even though Dollar dominated the first few minutes, resolute defending kept them out and slowly but surely we began to muscle our way into the game. One of Dollar’s wingers was quick and it was she who proved the most elusive during the first half. She managed to get around our back line a few times which resulted in goals on two occasions. However, spurred on by our impressive travelling support, we made inroads ourselves and soon scored two of our own, both by Daisy with lovely strikes from the top of the circle. Dollar scored once more, again through the same channel, just before half time so went into the break with the slight advantage.

Tactics in the second half were to see off the threat of their fast winger and be more direct with our own game and to start with this was very effective. The scores didn’t change for the first ten minutes, whereupon a two minute lull in concentration allowed them two quick goals. Iona then scored a cracker in the top corner courtesy of a super cross from Freyja and we threatened another soon afterwards but were kept our by the post. Time eventually got the better of us and although we finished the game on the ascendancy, we didn’t quite make up the deficit.

However, I was delighted with the improvement the girls showed in the second half. Our marking was good and we proved a constant threat on the Dollar goal. One or two things to work on before next Wednesday’s meeting with Belhaven, but the girls should be proud of today’s performance against a very useful side.
