U9A Hockey v Compass

Wednesday 2nd October 2019

Our first home fixture and the U9A & B teams waited excitedly for Compass to arrive at Tweedbank.  The weather was perfect for playing hockey.  The start was delayed due to the late arrival of Compass however the girls used the time wisely to adjust to playing on an astro pitch and also to practice their passing and shooting.

The first match was the U9As and this week’s team captain Martha won the toss and chose to take first push back.
As in our previous matches the girls quickly moved the ball towards their goal, however Compass were strong in defence and worked hard to stop the St Mary’s forwards getting in to a position to shoot.  Excellent passing and by utilising the width of the pitch the girls managed to get the ball to the top of the D where St Mary’s forwards were waiting and successfully shot on goal.

Play for the first half was mainly in our attacking half but a number of attacks by the Compass team saw our defence put into action their training from last week and Compass were stopped before reaching the D.  Further shots on goal saw St Mary’s finish the first half 3 goals in the lead.
In the second half the forwards and mid field continued to play strongly, again utilising the full width of the pitch and continuing to be quick to support the defence when required. The defence and midfield changed positions in the second half and adapted well proving their versatility.  Excellent tactics and team work saw the girls score 4 more goals.

Again, the girls showed a determination and skill level of much older players and the final score of 7 – 0 was hard earned.
