1st hockey v Cargilfield

 Wednesday 25th 2019

We knew today was going to test our resolve and we weren’t disappointed. This was our first venture onto the new astro at Cargilfield and being slightly shorter than most, it was always going to be an end to end encounter.

Our pre-match strategy went out of the window with just one minute on the clock. Tiggy was struck on the elbow during a Cargilfield short corner. Testament to her dedication to the team, she played on but later came off so Skye was drafted across from the 2nds, to take her place. Although there were some good passages of play from the girls, our marking wasn’t tight enough at times. The Cargilfield girls capitalised on any space they found and subsequently we were found chasing the game. I was pleased with the structure we maintained whilst on the offensive and a little more tenacity in front of goal in the first half may well have got us back into the game. As such, we were a little timid and allowed the Cargilfield girls to snuff out our attempts.

The second half got off to a good start and we were much more robust from the outset. Furthermore, the girls worked back much more rigorously and as such enjoyed much more possession. I was pleased the girls were rewarded shortly after the restart with a lovely goal from Iona which lifted spirits. Skye, Willa and Kiki however were under constant bombardment and coupled with some superb saves from Emma, kept the hosts tempered. Elena, Anna and captain, Freya worked their socks off in the second half too and deserved perhaps more for their efforts. They did managed to enforce a few short corners from which we scored our second, courtesy of a good strike form Skye but for everyone we scored, Cargilfield answered.

Although on paper we came away very much second, I was pleased with the girl’s resolve, their fearless defending at times and the progress they made throughout. With the Loretto tournament this Sunday, I have no doubt they will be a stronger and wiser team as a result of today and then next week we travel to Dollar for a 1445 start.

Well done, girls; I hope you’ve learned lots today.
