U11 Hockey v Kilgraston

Wednesday 18th September 2019
St. Marys’- 3: Kilgraston-2

Captain: Emily

It was lovely to welcome Kilgraston to Tweedbank on such a sunny Wednesday afternoon. The game got off to a flying start with the St Mary’s girls looking to offload the ball before they were tackled-this worked sometimes, but there can still be a tendency to hold on to the ball for too long (we will consider this to be work in practice!!)

For the first little while Beattie, Zara and Nicole were left with little to do, whilst the attack/midfield were doing all they could to keep the ball moving forward. A lovely passage of play from Lily to Celia and on to Freya, gave us the satisfaction of the first goal, after only 4 minutes.  Just 3 minutes later, a breakaway from Olivia resulted in goal number two. Perhaps resting on our laurels a little, we allowed Kilgraston to score just on half –time.

A productive chat in the break saw the girls re-motivated and it was super to see some fast attacking hockey from Charlotte and Tallulah, on the wing; confidence on the ball is key and it is vital that the girls use their natural speed. The 3 who had little to do were soon brought in to the game and all played with aplomb; with a switch around of positions, Mahi and Emily too, defended well and saw the benefit of keeping their sticks low.  After numerous attempts on goal and with Tanya sending a ‘flyer’ in to Olivia, goal number 3 was netted. Not to be outdone, Kilgraston too scored in the second half but the victory after half an hour’s play was ours! Well done, girls!
