St. Mary’s 1st XIII Rugby vs Merchiston

The U13 lads faced a tough challenge away to Merchiston this week having already had a small taster against them the previous week. The sun was shining and the lads were up for it.

We started well enjoying some good possession securing our own ball for multiple phases. However, Merchiston defended well and eventually secured a turnover and caught our boys napping running over out wide for the first score. The next few minutes of the match followed a similar pattern and we found ourselves a few scores down despite having the lion’s share of the possession. Led by the form 8s the boys rallied and took the game to Merchiston. The forwards carried well making good yards all over the pitch and our backs moved the ball around well finding gaps in the opposition defence. Our wingers found space and we started to get in behind them. We came back into the match with decisive running and excellent support play. Captain John was outstanding in delivering a hat trick of scores. Our work at the breakdown was excellent to see drawing praise from opposition coaches and the referee. On the whole our defence was solid. Nothing came through the middle of the park and the boys worked tirelessly for each other throughout the game. From fullback Ed saved the team several tries with his ferocious and fearless tackling.

In the end Merchiston were too strong for us but we showed great fight and can take pride in our performance. A good first outing and the lads will be hungry for more.
