U13s at Merchiston Festival

On Wednesday afternoon, the St. Mary's U13s enjoyed their first run-out of the season at the Merchiston Festival. This is a series of semi-competitive games where coaching is encouraged and squads have an opportunity to try out different combinations.

We travelled with a good squad comprising Isaac B, Tristan, George, Ted, Geordie and Blair in the forwards ahead of Mitchell, Captain John T, Josh, Ollie L, Ollie dG and Archie J in the backs.

The Festival kicked off with a match against unknown quantities, Clifton Hall. The short game was a belter with long passages of play punctuated by savage work from the forwards at the breakdown and some excellent handling by the backs. The game see-sawed back and forth before Captain John T scored two super tries to give St. Mary's the win.

We followed this with another humdinger against Ardvreck. The St. Mary's boys came back from two tries down to draw a very tight game right at the death. The following match against Loretto was a little more one-sided as the Musselburgh side ran everything through their big boy and won by two tries. It should be noted that, having sustained a couple of injuries, we played with two less men for much of this match.

We finished the day with two losses to a very strong Cargilfield side and a skilful Merchiston outfit.

Overall, this was a most encouraging outfit and, although there is plenty to work on, the boys look to be a very able cohort.

Well done to you all!
