U11A Cricket v Fettes Prep School

On Wednesday afternoon, the St. Mary's U11A cricket team took on Fettes Prep School out on the Front Field.

We are particularly lucky to have such an outstandingly beautiful sports field and privileged to have an Estates Manager of Mr Bell's calibre to prepare it so perfectly.

It proved to be the scene for an enthralling contest played in the best of spirits by two well matched teams. Fettes won the toss and elected to offer St. Mary's the chance to bat first. The Undies duly took advantage of the opportunity and duly began to rack up a big score. 50 soon became 100 before spirally ever higher through 110 to 120 and on to 130 and 140 before finally come to a ticking halt at 142 as the 20 overs finally elapsed.

It had been a whirlwind performance with Ewan, Henry, Josh and Isaac adding a flurry of runs before the flamboyant John joined the fray adding 81 undefeated runs including some sumptuous shots.

John with the match ball

The target looked insurmountable. Indeed, I have only seen a target that high set on a very few occasions. I have never seen it overtaken.

Fettes, however, were unaware of the sheer impossibility of the task before them and set about building a very decent total. They righted the ship after their best batsman was run out in the first over by Nic J before he had even faced a ball. Their big number three strode on to the wicket and began to bludgeon the ball to all four points. Aided by some poor fielding on the boundaries, the Fettes score soared ever upwards.

When they got to 100 with five overs to play I started to fret. How could we have squandered such a massive lead? How could we contrive to lose a match like this? I should not have worried.

Fielding hero Nic J, at the time our 10th choice bowler stepped up to the crease and delivered an absolute peach of an over. He skittled one and put a catch up to dismiss another. With the Fettes danger man out it was left to Isaac and Henry to steer the ship home for the last two overs leaving Fettes out of time on 130.
