1st XI Cricket v Longridge Towers School

Wednesday 15th May

St. Mary’s won by 32 runs

The 1st XI: Mac (captain), Thomas, Archie, Jake, Ollie, Callum, Ted, George, Geordie, John & Mitchell
As with last Sunday’s 6s tournament at Glenalmond, today’s unspoilt sky made for a most pleasant afternoon; a real treat for our first home game of this campaign.

We were reduced to 15 overs today in order for Longridge to be away by 1515, so after winning the toss and electing to bat, Mac’s team were encouraged to ‘get on with it!’ And that’s precisely what they did! Ted (36 not out) and George (15 not out) opened the batting and immediately put the scorers to work. Their running between the wickets was aggressive, they both played some lovely shots and got the team off to a perfect start. As the over ticked by, they retired to allow others an opportunity at the crease. Mac (4) was run out taking on an optimistic bye, Mitchell (8 not out) showed progress in playing some flowing cricket shots, Ollie (7 not out) played and missed a few times but managed to score much needed runs, Archie (1) had a swing and a miss and was bowled and Thomas (6 not out) and John (2 not out) both brought the innings to a close. We put on 76 before losing the first wicket and then managed to get to 114 for 2, setting Longridge a target of 115.

In the field, the boys looked hungry! Their fielding from the outset was sharp. Catches stuck, bowling was on the money and it was clear that Longridge were going to have to work for their runs. The wickets were shared around the bowlers, but Mitchell ended up with the best figures on 6 for 1 from 2 overs. Some alert fielding from Ollie and Archie earned the team a superb run out and their overall performance on the field, was most encouraging. Longridge managed to see out their 15 overs with the loss of 6 wickets but ended up a few runs shy of their target.

Congratulations to all the boys on the first win of the season. Next week we travel to Fettes for a 1400 start.
