 U13 Glenalmond Cricket 6s

Sunday 12th May

The squad: Mac (captain), Archie M, Jake, Thomas, Ollie, Callum & Mitchell
This time last year we set forth for Glenalmond following days of heavy rain, the consequence of which were soggy pitches and less than ideal conditions. Today however, couldn’t have been more different. Barely a cloud showed itself all day and we basked in 16 degree heat; the umbrellas and wellies of last year were replaced by hats and sun cream this year!

Our first game was against Cargilfield. Being put into field first, a good start was crucial and in limited overs cricket, there’s little time to warm up! After the first 2 overs, Cargilfield were on 10 for 1 and we were most definitely in the driving seat. Overs 3, 4 & 5 didn’t quite go according to plan and Cargilfield ended up setting us a target of 65. In reply, we gave it a good go, but fell short of the target by some 30 runs.

Next we faced Club side, Kinross. This time we batted first but again struggled to find the boundaries. Running between the wickets was better and the boys were beginning to look eager. We set Kinross a target of 42. Our bowling and fielding was also improved and with the exception of a couple of dropped catches, we were making progress. However, the Kinross openers were good batsmen and surpassed their target with an over to spare.

We then had a 3 hour wait for our next game, so we managed to squeeze in an extra,  friendly, with Loretto. As this wasn’t to count towards the day’s competition, we played 7 aside, getting all players involved. We batted first this time and again, I was pleased to see the boys growing in confidence. All 7 boys batted and together they put on 33, which was always going to be tough to defend. In reply, our fielding and bowling again seemed to raise a level. Jake and Archie both held excellent catches, Archie’s being taken on the boundary where his momentum unfortunately carried him over the line before he had time to release the ball, the result of which was 6 runs to Loretto! Loretto managed to hit the target in the 4th over but I was pleased with how this inexperienced side were really starting to get to grips with this format of the game. Callum, Ollie and Mitchell all bowled particularly well.

For our final game of the day, we faced Craigclowan and to say the boys were up for this game, would be an understatement! Mac won the toss and elected to bat first, so he and Archie opened the innings. Both boys cottoned onto some good bowling and after 3 overs we were sitting on 30 without loss. Mac was run out in the 4th over, which brought Thomas to the crease who carried on where Mac left off, hitting some good, powerful shots. Jake came in at the end of the 5th over and hit a crucial boundary, all of which set a target of 55. With the ball, the boys were alert and on top of their game. Fielding was tight and the boys protected the boundaries well. Ultimately it boiled down to the final over. Craigclowan need 13 to win which they managed on the final ball!

As I said to the boys afterwards, this was a fantastic end to the day and by far our best game, from so many perspectives. Had we held onto a couple of catches and managed to score a few more runs, then a couple of the games today may well have gone our way. The boys conducted themselves brilliantly and we had a most enjoyable day’s cricket.

Thank you to Glenalmond for hosting us all so well and also to our travelling support, whose encouragement of the boys was very much appreciated.
