U13 Rugby vs Merchiston Castle School

Wednesday 20th March

1strugby

On Wednesday afternoon the boys faced up against perennial rivals Merchiston Castle School. We were able to field our strongest squad with Jake and George either side of Archie Mo in the front row, Ted and Mac behind and Caelan at Number 8. Callum started at 9 with John at 10, Thomas and Ollie E in the centres, Geordie and Archie J on the wings and Ed at full back. Ollie L and the returning Mitchell warmed the bench.

The match kicked off under the capable supervision of Melrose RFC’s Mr Hogg and we were soon under pressure as quick hands and weak tackling forced the ball wide down the left channel before a speedy ruck brought it back in field for an early try. This was quickly followed by another before we finally found our feet and started to pressure Merchiston. Unfortunately, a missed touch put us under immediate pressure for the second try and we went into half-time down on the scoreboard when we could, and perhaps should, have been level.

Half-time score: St Mary’s 0 – 12 Merchiston Castle School

The second half was a very closely fought affair with both sides involved in a midfield armwrestle with both packs going toe to toe for supremacy. If anything, St. Mary’s had the edge in this department with Jake making ground every time he picked and goed and Archie Mo, George, Ted, Mac and Caelan running the rocket line perfectly.

Thomas scored a superb line to score directly from John’s clever switch play from a scrum and Ollie E was driven over by the pack after a sumptuous run.

Unfortunately, we did not win the match but this group of boys, that came together as a bit of a ragtag rabble at the start of the season, produced some beautiful rugby. Some of the passages of play were perfect as they built phases and showed real patience in attack.

They can be very proud, as their coaches are, of all that they have achieved this season.

I Hope you are sitting comfortably ....
