Under 11A Netball Tournament

Wednesday 13th March 2019

Captain: Cadence

Very keen to capitalise on their so far unbeaten season, the girls were in a positive frame of mind as we took to the courts. In Pool 2, we played Fettes first and got off to a flying start. The ball was moved rapidly down court, from the centre pass, leaving Mabel , Skye and Emily with little to do for vast chunks of the game, only a couple of wayward passes allowedwin1 Fettes to score and we came off court with a 6-3 victory.

Next up we faced Cargilfield, who we had both beaten and drawn earlier in the season. Slow off the mark this time, Cargilfield were 2-0 up within the first 2 minutes and it looked like there may be trouble ahead. However, the fighting spirit, for which this group are renowned, came to the fore and 9 goals were netted in quick succession and once again St. Mary’s took control with a 9-5 victory.

A quick chat and then we played Craigclowan; having beaten them earlier in the season we knew they would want to make amends. A tighter, end to end game, which was definitely won by accurate shooting and good defending (on our part!) Mid court play was

very evenly matched, perhaps Craigclowan even had the upper hand here! We were thrilled to leave the court with another victory, and a tough fought one; 3-0.

We were then, the Pool winners, and so headed in to the semi-final against Loretto. We had played, and beaten them convincingly, two weeks ago, but it was vital we did not rest on our laurels, however excellent teamwork and accurate shooting ensured us a 10-0 victory and thus a chance to win the tournament. Up against Fettes once again, we knew they would be eager to even the score line. Umpired by neutral staff, this game gave me the opportunity to observe from the side-lines and I was joined by a superbly vocal U13 St. Mary’s team; nerves took over and it was a good 2 minutes before the girls settled in to their game and began to communicate effectively, 3-2 up at half time, there was all to play for. Fettes kept getting the ball in to their D but were unable to capitalise on this. To my delight, rather than letting their head’s drop, our girls gritted their teeth, jumped for their lives and fired the ball to our shooters; 6 goals to Fettes 2 in the second half retained us the U11 title and an unbeaten season!

Goals: Cadence x19, Tiggy x 15
