On a very cold and blustery morning we set off in high spirits to Peffermill for the Watson’s Annual Tournament. We were drawn in Group A with George Watson’s As, High School of Glasgow and Mary Erskine Bs. This was a tough group, but the girls weren’t put off by this.
Game 1 v Mary Erskine’s B.
St. Mary’s showed strength from the first blow of the whistle. Defensively we were extremely strong and no way was Mary Erskine’s getting through into our D. Good passes from midfield allowed our forwards to attack strongly putting in 4 super goals. 4 -0
Game 2 v High School of Glasgow
The girls had no time to rest as it was straight into the next match. This was a very evenly played game swinging from both ends. We had several great opportunities at goal, but just couldn’t finish. We gave away too many long corners due to foot fouls which was frustrating, however the girls were quick to set and defended well. High School of Glasgow’s goal trickled over the goal line, we were unfortunate. 0-1
Game 3 v Watson’s A
Thankfully the girls had 20 mins to rest and refuel for this game. They came out fighting, it was another excellent 12 minute match. When the score went 1 -1 the girls dug deep fought hard and were rewarded with a wonderful goal which came up wide from the defence and beautifully picked up by the forwards. A great win 2 -1.
Game 4 v Dollar – Cup Semi Final
The girls totally deserved their place in the Cup and were on a high. The game against Dollar could have gone either way, but we couldn’t get our hits into space and with inaccurate passing too often intercepted by the opposition the girls made it difficult to create opportunities at goal. Definitely a nail- biting match against a strong Dollar team who went on to win the Cup. 0 -1
Game 5 v Heriots – 3rd or 4th Position
A game very similar to the previous one where too many hits were being made up the middle, they needed to go wider. Although there was more composure on the ball, panic often set in and we were too quick to release which often ended up with the ball going straight to the opposition. However, the girls never put their heads down, they played all 5 matches with energy and a winning belief which was wonderful to watch. I am so proud of them all. Thank you to Frazer from Watson’s, who was our umpire for the day, and too all the parents who came to support.
