1st XIII Football v Longridge Towers School

13th February 2019

A visit to Longridge was on the cards for our last fixture before half term. We had a good journey and the boys were excited to get stuck into a Longridge team who were rumoured to be a strong footballing side. We managed to play 9 aside so that all the boys could get a good run around on a lovely pitch in great conditions.

We started the game slowly and absorbed much of the early pressure. Longridge had a few boys with excellent dribbling ability and were giving our defence a good workout. We managed some solid periods of possession with Ollie E. and Mitchell providing good passes to our forwards. Ted and Thomas worked tirelessly in defence to keep them out and start our attacks from deep. We pressed forward for an attack and were caught on the counter attack when the defence found themselves out of position making it 1-0 to our hosts. We continued the first half in the same vain and after enjoying some possession we would give the ball away in the middle of the pitch. Leaving our forwards with very few opportunities. Another fast counter attack by Longridge made it 2-0 before the break.

In the second half we wanted to focus on keeping the ball and not giving it to them with careless passing. This was noticeably better and we put some real pressure on them in the opening minutes of the half, knowing a goal would change the feel of the match and bring us right back in it. Stuart showed some lovely skill to get round a man and play the ball up to Ollie L who was clean through on goal. After a 30m run he was unable to apply the finishing touches. Ollie E. put Ollie L. through again not long after but Longridge survived once more. Geordie put in a mammoth performance in the second half making countless tackles and starting off almost all of our attacks with calmness and precision. John was superb in the second half and made some really vital interceptions. Despite Mac making numerous big saves throughout the match Longridge managed a third goal before the end and the game was gone.
A strong performance by the lads and some promising play. We must look after possession more but the effort from the lads was outstanding.
Well done lads.
