1st XIII Football v Loretto

Wednesday 6th Feb

It was great to get a fixture this week away at Loretto. The bad weather meant the boys hadn’t had a chance to play a match for 3 weeks so they were raring to go on a mild day in Mussleburgh. The journey up was a good one and the boys were in great spirits.

We arrived slightly early and were able to start early for a longer match. The pitch was small and the goals even smaller so it looked as though it would be a low scoring affair with space being hard to come by. The boys set up with a strong defence and a game plan of hitting the other team with fast counter attacks. This proved to be the case when Loretto were attacking in the opening minutes only for us to break down the wing with Ollie L. scoring a superb goal to put S.t Mary’s ahead. Loretto came back strong and our defence were forced to work hard to keep them out. A combination of Geordie, Ted and John made countless tackles and interceptions to ensure Mac had an easy time in goal. Throughout the first half we had a few darts up the pitch showing good strength in midfield with Ollie E. and flair and speed out wide with Mitchell and Stuart.

In the second half the sun was in our eyes and we knew we would have to keep up our endeavour if we were to hold onto our lead. Our defence, led superbly by Thomas, continued their diligent work and every time Loretto attacked there was someone there to cut it out. Our superb defence won us the match and Mac only had to make two saves but when the time came he did his bit for the team showing excellent reactions to keep the clean sheet.
Well done lads.
