U11B Football v Loretto

Wednesday 6th Feb

Our U11 B boys welcomed Loretto on Wednesday for our 2nd match of the term. It was good to get a competitive game, though underfoot conditions were poor.

The match started off with a bang as Loretto immediately got into their stride in the first play. They moved the ball about well as they progressed up-field, took a shot, and we found ourselves a goal down in 30 seconds. We were caught cold but didn’t allow it to affect us as the next 10 minutes was fairly even. At times we moved the ball about quite well, but the ground conditions were having an influence on both teams. However, Finlay B, Rory C and Jack H still managed to make telling passes and bring others into play. In defence, Isaac S, Tristan B and Christian G were working well to tackle and disrupt any threatening Loretto play. Both teams were making chances with Rory C coming close for us as he struck first time from a corner but it slipped just past the post with their keeper beaten. At our end we continued to defend well with Hector C making some good saves and showing bravery as he dived on ball at the feet of the opposition. Blair A up front wasn’t getting too many opportunities, but he covered back and tackled very well. Then, it was Finlay B who came close to scoring as his shot from another corner just went wide.

With 5 minutes remaining in the half, we went 2 down. Defending from a corner we cleared the ball out but it came straight back in which caught us out and a Loretto player stabbed it home. A minute later it was 0-3. A shot from distance didn’t look like it would trouble Hector C in goal, but it skidded in front of him in the mud and eluded him. To end the half, Rory C again came close from another corner but the keeper saved well.

The 2nd half started even with both teams looking to attack at every opportunity and get the ball forward and away from their goal as the mud became more troublesome. A Tristan B handball in the box resulted in a penalty for our visitors which they duly despatched to add to their tally. Midway through the half, a Loretto shot was hit weakly and going wide, but it found a fellow Loretto player lurking at the far post and he poked it into the net. Despite the score-line our boys continued to work hard to get on the scoresheet. Finlay B, Christian G and Archie D were getting through a power of work in defence and made tackle after tackle. Then with 2 minutes remaining a Tristan B own goal made it 6 as he headed into his own goal. However, he made amends as he threaded through a pass to the unmarked Jack H and he dribbled on and slotted it past the advancing keeper to make the final score 1-6.
