2nd VIII Football v Loretto Nippers

On Wednesday afternoon, the St. Mary's 2nd VIII had an opportunity to display their particular brand of total football in that pantheon of prep school sport; Newfield, Musselburgh. A strong defensive unit of Alex NN, Archie J and gnarled veteran Callum A sat behind midfielders Archie Mo, Ed S and Caelan with a rattlesnake of a striker, Jake M, lurking upfield. George R would prove to be a rock in the goalmouth.

The match kicked off and the home side were soon swarming round the St. Mary's goal. Wave after wave of red attacks were broken on rugged green defence. However, an unfortunate throw crossed the ball perfectly for the onrushing Loretto striker to stroke the ball home from close range. We compounded our misfortune within 2 minutes by repeating the feat with another beautifully weighted throw into the keeper's corridor of uncertainty.

Two goals down was not where we wanted to be and we were spurred into action. The midfield started to press upfield and the defence were much more assertive in their challenges. For the 10 minutes either side of half-time we were all over the home team like a cheap suit.

Archies J and Mo, Caelan and Ed were really strong as we moved to a 2:4:1 formation and provided the lurking Jake with plenty of chances. Unfortunately, we were just unable to convert them and leaked a couple more when the valiant Callum, George and Alex NN were left a little exposed on the break.

The match finished as a good win for Loretto Nippers but the scoreline did not detract from a fantastically enjoyable fixture.

Well done, lads!
