U11A Football v Loretto

St. Mary's Melrose 7 - Loretto 0

Wednesday 6th Feb

This week we faced a Loretto U12 side, who unfortunately were missing most of their key players to hockey and football fixtures up in Musselburgh. The weather, despite being clear had previously been very poor, and there was half an inch of mud with frozen ground underneath, which lead to an absolute quagmire of a pitch.

Our boys were very much on the offensive and through some nippy running worked the ball effectively into the Loretto box where there were plenty of goals. The Loretto lads never lost heart though and plugged away with a great positive spirit. At half time, we decided to mix the teams up and for some variety and played a mock Edinburgh derby, Hibernian V Heart of Midlothian. As a Hibby I was gutted to see the Hibs boys loose, 5 goals to 2!

Overall, we had a good kick about and the lads enjoyed themselves in the fresh winter air. It seems to be a common theme that at this time of year, the weather really does turns against us and fixtures can be rare, therefore it was great to get a decent run around with a sound bunch of lads.

A huge thanks to Mr Bell for setting up the pitches and we wish him luck in nursing them back to full health over the half term break. Furthermore, thank you to all the parents who came to watch, the Loretto coaches for their efforts but most importantly the boys who put in a mammoth shift in sloppy conditions!

Man of the Match – Ollie de Gier – Hat-trick!
