1st VII Netball v Belhaven

MPFEB

The team: Lara (GS), Hannah (GA), Mhairi (WA), Eliza (C), Molly (WD), Emma SW (GD) & Rosie (GK)

Another bracing afternoon for netball; cold on the fingers but the ground frost lifted in time for our 1415 start. Following the disappointment of losing last week’s fixture to the cold, we were delighted to welcome Belhaven this afternoon. A fortnight ago the girls had to be at the top of our game to beat Cargilfield and this was only our second match of the season. So, it was with great excitement that the girls took to the court.

The first quarter got off to a flying start. Both teams were careful with possession but a couple of fabulous interceptions, saw us edge ahead. Hannah & Lara both shot well and were supplied with some quick and accurate passes. Mhairi, Eliza and Molly worked hard in the middle of the court and managed to control the game. Their movement off the ball was super, as was their passing. Emma and Rosie were busy too. The Belhaven girls were taking some long-range shots, successfully at times, but the girls were quick to the rebounds. The first quarter score was 7- 2.

As the game went on, we managed to maintain the lead but the Belhaven girls got up to speed and they too made some great interceptions. They had to work hard though as our work rate was superb and we were managing to counter our visitors step for step. Hannah and Lara were having to work hard for their shots and any rebounds were snaffled by the Belhaven GK & GD, but we managed to extend the lead and went into the half time 14 - 7.

After the break the girls continued to play some lovely netball. Perhaps their work rate was toiling which allowed the Belhaven girls to take the initiative but our visitors were also much more clinical with the ball and deservedly narrowed the gap to 18 - 12 going into the final quarter.

A quiet chat in the interval encouraged the girls to find another gear for the final ten minutes. This quarter possibly saw the best netball being played from both sides. The ball went from end to end non-stop, both teams were very effective with the ball and worked relentlessly off it. Our shooting was good and Rosie and Emma at the other end managed to protect their goal very well. Molly and her team managed to extend their lead and the game finished 25 - 15

This was another fantastic display of netball. Competition for the seven 1sts places this season is tough. There are many girls vying for the positions but today the girls more than justified their selection. Very well done, girls.

Next week we head to Fettes for the Dandylions netball trials which starts at 1400.
