Cargilfield 15, St. Mary’s 24

Today’s game at Cargilfield was our first of the season. The girls have trained hard so far this term, so I was delighted with today’s results (despite the fact that they look half asleep in the photo, or should that be, half look asleep!)
Captained by Molly, the girls got off to a fantastic start and in the first quarter played some lovely netball. Lara (GS) and Hannah (GA) rarely missed their shots at goal, both hitting the 85% mark; impressive by anyone’s standard!  Eliza (C), Mhairi (WA) and Molly (WD) controlled the middle of the court very effectively and Cargilfield found it difficult to gain or retain any possession. Rosie (GK) and Amelie (GD) weren’t as busy as others on the court, but they too were very effective at intercepting many passes and distributing the ball very efficiently.
The second quarter saw much of the same and we went to half time 16-8. Hannah and Lara continued to find the net almost every time and had it not been for the Cargilfield work rate, the score differential might have been even greater.  In quarters three and four, our movement perhaps became laboured and we became sloppy with possession. This allowed Cargilfield to see much more of the ball, so Amelie, Rosie and Molly were busy. However they were quick to the rebounds and evidently up to the challenge. Cargilfield did manage to score a few more, but at no greater rate than we did, so they weren’t able to make an impression on the goal difference.
For the final ten minutes we swapped positions around and experimented. This worked to a certain extent but the linking and interchanges weren’t quite as slick.  The girls continued to work exceptionally hard, matched Cargilfield every step of the way and even managed to extend their lead. I was thrilled with the way the girls played this afternoon and I have no doubt, with continued effort during games and practice at breaks, they will go from strength to strength this season.  Very well done.
