1st VIII v Riley House

 16th January 2019

For our first football match of the season we travelled to Strathallan to take on Riley house. It was a lovely sunny day and the boys were excited get stuck in. With most boys having little experience playing football our main goal was to enjoy ourselves and work well as a team.
We spent the majority of the first half defending against a skilful Riley House side who passed the ball well and controlled possession. Our defence was outstanding with brave tacking and countless interceptions from Archie and Thomas at the back. Mac was superb in goal stopping numerous shots and receiving plaudits from many of the home supporters as well as the referee. Ted, Ollie E. and Mitchell were strong in the midfield showing good touches and providing chances for our forwards. In a first half where we had very little of the ball Ollie L. and Stuart were limited to a few counter attacks in which they nearly bagged a goal late on in the half.

We got to the break at 0-0 and the boys were pleased. In the second half we had a little more possession and a few chances opened up for Mitchell and Ollie L. As the boys began to tire the game opened up and both teams had chances to score, thanks to both keepers, no one could break the deadlock. Towards the end of the half a mistake in our defence led to them pouncing and scoring the opening goal. Moments later Archie hit a perfectly timed volley in to the top corner, unfortunately it was his own net and we were 2-0 down. In a frantic last minute with both teams giving their all a third goal went in when a fine initial save from Ollie L. unfortunately he couldn’t keep out the rebound.

Although the result didn’t go our way the boys showed great team spirit and desire throughout playing with smiles on their faces!
