1st XIII vs Craigclowan

For the second week in a row the boys faced a long away trip in miserable conditions. We arrived in good time and had a good warm up with the boys eager to put last week’s poor performance behind them. They were clearly more focussed this week displaying their focus with good skills in the challenging conditions.

We began the game well showing good ball retention and showing good handling ability in the wet. Credit to Criagclowan who had several strong tacklers in their team and held us out in the opening passages of the match. The opening score went the way of the hosts after a missed tackle deep in the Craigclowan half allowed one of their players to gallop up the pitch to score. The boys stuck together and were determined not to let their heads go down. Another good period of possession followed with strong running from Ollie E and Ted. Throughout the half we handled the ball extremely well and this allowed us to attack the areas we wanted to attack. George and Ollie E impressed with their handling in the wet conditions. Unfortunately, the final pass wouldn’t stick and we couldn’t get over the line. As always Thomas and Archie led our defence putting in some impressive tackles, keeping us in the game in the first half. We scored a good try before half time after a long series of penalties conceded by the hosts. We held onto possession well and Thomas eventually crossed after some good patience from Callum at scrum half.

In the second half the weather began to effect the game more, with lots of dropped balls and mistakes from both teams. Again missed tackles allowed them to get another cheap score and the boys faced a challenge to get back into the game. They showed great heart and refused to give up on the game. Mac led from the front with Thomas and Archie close behind as we threw everything at our opponents. Eventually after some excellent control from John Mac crossed the whitewash and John, nerveless as ever, slotted the kick to put us within a score. The closing moments of the game were as tense as any this season and the boys did themselves proud. We didn’t manage another score but showed some great character and a big improvement on last week.
