1st XIII vs Ardvreck

We left a very wet and windy Melrose and began the long journey up to Ardvreck. Fortunately the weather improved and after a rather short warm up the game began. As is very often the case we took a while to get into the game and some of us may have still been on the bus! Ardvreck were a gutsy side and enjoyed much of the early possession scoring 2 tries through our missed tackles. The boys got themselves going and with some fine running by Ollie E and Thomas. We began to climb into the game and John finished off a good try towards the end of the first half after impressive running by Thomas and George. This put us right in contention to come back strong in the second half.

In the second half the Ardvreck boys put in an impressive defensive display and although we had a lot of the ball we couldn’t break down their defence. Ardvreck were strong in the breakdown and disrupted a lot of our own ball, stopping us from building any momentum. Too often we would make breaks and lose the ball through lack of support or poor decision making.

In the end Ardvreck won the match but the team learnt some valuable lessons about playing the conditions and how important it is to play as a team for all of the game. Throughout the game Archie M. and Ollie E. impressed with their strong tackling and effective work at the breakdown.

Scorers – John

Man of the Match – Ollie E.
