The squad: Lara J (capt.), Anna M (GK), Imo B, Willa H, Daisy SW, Iona W, Libby B, Elena dG & Kiki Y

Wet Wednesdays are challenging and so today proved to be! However, the high winds and torrential rain forecast for the morning never arrived, so at 11.00am with nothing more than an overcast sky and an incorrect forecast to go by, the decision was made to plough on with today's fixtures; 'fortune favours the brave' and all that!

The moment we set foot on the astro at Tweedbank at 1345, the rain started and so it remained for the duration and it wasn't just rain. There seemed to be someone throwing buckets of water at us! Had Mowden not travelled quite as far, we perhaps might have thought better of it, but it wasn't cold, just wet, very wet, so we braved the conditions and carried on!

St. Mary's made the better start and for the first ten minutes, shot after shot and short corner after short corner rained down upon the Mowden defence. They withstood the barrage and quite against the run of play, broke down the other end of the pitch and scored. This seemed to spur on Lara and her team and it wasn't long afterwards that continued pressure finally paid and we got the equaliser, followed moments later by number two. The girls were playing some lovely hockey and dominated the vast majority of the half. However, on the stroke of half time, Mowden found themselves down in our D once again and despite saving three consecutive shots at her, Anna was beaten and Mowden equalised.

2 - 2 at half time was flattering for the Mowden girls but a recipe for a good second half. Given what had happened in the first half, I was confident that the girls would fight back and gain the upper hand again. However, that didn't proved to be. Yes, the girls fought hard and worked tirelessly on the pitch, but Mowden began to take control of larger chunks of the game and took a two goal lead. We did manage to claw one back but ran out of time to find the equaliser. Yes, the Mowden 2nds had had to pull in a couple of girls from the As to play for the Bs due to some sickness on the bus journey north, but that aside, this was a game I though the girls might have won. As I said, they played some great hockey but perhaps lacked that bit of extra tenacity and composure in front of goal.

That said, we could do nothing but admire all the girls on the pitch for withstanding such torrents throughout the entire game. A tired and very soggy troop of hockey players headed back to school to change and await a much deserved, hot match tea.

Well done to Mowden for also playing some lovely hockey and grafting out a well deserved win.

Next week the 2nds travel to Riley House for a 1415 start.
