U11B Rugby v Mowden Hall

3rd October 2018

The U11 B’s welcomed their counterparts Mowden Hall from over the border on Wednesday on yet another glorious autumn afternoon. Winning the toss, Mowden decided to take the tap and pass to start this 7 a side match. Early exchanges were fairly even, but it was Mowden who struck first to take the lead with a well worked try. Immediately though St. Marys equalised as Tom D took the restart on the hoof and drove through the Mowden defense. Again another try was scored from the restart, but this time it was Mowden who scored aided by some lackluster St. Marys tackling.

The next few minutes saw St. Marys enjoy a purple patch with Tom D, Robert L, Finlay B and Isaac S in the thick of it. We enjoyed more possession and territory with passes sticking. During this time Robert L was first to score with a typical powerful and evasive run. Then Tom D added his 2nd after some good assistance from Jack H and Christian G. Then, just before halftime, Jack H fielded a Mowden kick and made ground. From the ruck on the line, Fergus Y picked up and dived over. Halftime 4-2.

The 2nd half saw St. Marys continue from where they left off. Some nice interplay, with Rory C and Hector C involved, saw Robert L get his hands on the ball. Robert, again with determination, took off and made the goal-line to extend the home lead. Just As We threatened to pull away with the match, Mowden started to turn things around as they themselves enjoyed more possession. Some good support play and offloading out of the tackle saw Mowden score a nice try.

A good pick up and feed from Torquil H to Robert L again saw him do well to make the line and keep the 3 try lead. Mowden though continued with their good spell. So good that over the next few minutes they drew level, even though some good defense work still went in with Hector C, Finlay B and Jack H making good tackles.

With time running out the match was there to be won by either side. Tom D, just back on, took matters in hand and drove powerfully to make the line and restore the St. Marys lead. Mowden replied from the restart to again level. The last play was now called and from the tap off St. Marys made good ground. Then the ball went left to Robert L who saw his chance. He gave his all as he ran up the left touchline and made it in at the corner as Mowden desperately tried to cut him off! A great effort. Final score 8-7 to St. Marys.

Well done to both teams in a ding dong of a match that could have gone either way. Next week, Cargilfield at home.
