What a day! On the back of winning the Loretto Sevens, I knew this talented bunch had the ability to win today’s matches-it was just a matter of keeping calm, composed and letting the hockey do the talking!

From the outset it became obvious we were the team to beat; our play was more structured and we were not afraid to tackle the opposition. It was quite amusing to hear the other Coaches shouting, ‘just tackle them, and stop backing off!’ With our defence holding strong, the mid-field running circles round their opponents and the strikers taking a lead, each girl was confident in her role. Convincing wins over Royal Grammar and Craigclowan helped our cause and we knew that number of goals scored would help if the points total was the same as other schools. Having been beaten by Cargilfield earlier in the season, we knew they were strong
hitters, luckily for us their one attempt at goal was hit by a back sti

ck and we won the match 1-0; Fettes were an unknown outfit and after our goal, Freyja instructed her team to play a defensive game-and that they did, Fettes one attempt (by an ex-St. Mary’s classmate!) was well saved, by Lily. Sedbergh Prep were used to playing 7-a-side and although they did not threaten our goal, their very able GK saved our numerous attempts which led to the no score draw.
St. Mary’s were placed first with 21 points, Fettes and Cargilfield had 15 each with Fettes coming 2nd on goal difference. A superb day and a well-deserved outcome! We shall be representing District 11 at the IAPS U11 finals, at Rugby School, on 21st November!

Goals: Mabel x 1; Kate x 1; Freyja x 6; Tiggy x 5
