2nd VIII Hockey v Dollar Academy
Wednesday 3rd, October
St. Mary's 2, Dollar 1
Albeit late, today’s game started with aplomb! Last year we had suffered a heavy defeat up at Dollar, but this year something told me the girls weren’t going to be bitten twice!
From the outset, the game was played at a phenomenal pace. End to end, attack followed by attack, so it was a surprise there weren’t more goals. Undoubtedly there would have been, had it not been for some outstanding defending and goal keeping. Amelie and Daisy were rock solid, not only halting wave after wave of white shirts but also clearing the ball wide very effectively and Hannah was instrumental, making many great saves. Lara, Libby and Imo in the midfield worked tirelessly and deserve huge credit for supporting both their defence and their attacking players. Iona and Elena also had their work cut out. A couple of stronger Dollar defenders were very effective and proved very difficult to get past.
Despite this, just before the break, our attacking combination worked the ball in behind the white defence, Lara crossed the ball to Iona who in turn threaded the ball through the Libby, who gleefully swept home the opening goal. There were no further goals in the first half.
The second period continued in similar vein. Our second goal was more of a scramble in the circle and a loose ball found its way to Iona who calmly tucked it into the bottom corner. So, at 2 – 0 the girls obviously thought the game was theirs and so switched off somewhat! With two minutes to go, Dollar won a short corner from which they scored and then as the final whistle went, they won another. Despite the ball being injected but not stopped outside the D, the Dollar girls shot and scored but the goal was correctly overruled, as the ball must be brought outside the D on short corners.
So, what a fantastic win this was for the girls. Dollar, as expected, were a feisty team and wanted the win every bit as much as we did. However, once again the grit, determination and sheer desire to throw themselves into the firing line for each other, earned the St. Mary’s girls a thoroughly deserved victory.
Next week we travel to Belhaven, for a 2.00pm start at Hallhill.
