St. Mary's U11B vs Merchiston U11B

Wednesday 12th Sept

It was good to get the rugby season underway on Wednesday as we welcomed our visitors Merchiston on a sunny and warm autumn afternoon.
Indeed it was our visitors who were invited to start the match and from the tap and pass they kept the ball well to put us under some early initial pressure. But St. Marys tackled well, and although we struggled to get our own hands on the ball during these minutes we managed to keep them from going over our try line. Prominent in defence were Isaac B, Isaac S and Robbie L.

Play settled down and the match became a more even affair. St. Marys now were enjoying more possession and territory. Jack H and Finlay B had a couple of decent darts as we became more threatening. We still had to continue defending though as Merchiston looked to get ball wide to their flyers, but good tackles from Christian G and Fergus Y prevented a possible breach. Then, as Merchiston changed to driving a little more up front, some good continuity led to the game’s first try for our visitors. The match was becoming a little more fluent now as the players from both sides gradually adjusted to the new laws. With a minute to go to halftime St. Marys almost levelled. Hector C and Fergus Y linked well to get the ball out to Jack H on the left wing. Jack then had a great run as he sped through the Merchiston defence and just as he looked to score a great covering tackle brought him down just short. Worse still, Merchiston turned ball over from their line and 2 passes later they had scored at the other end. A little deflated from this, we lost possession from the restart and Merchiston took full advantage to add a third try in the final play of the half. 0-3

St. Marys started the 2nd half and immediately went on the offensive. Good drives from Fergus Y and Isaac B got us off to a good start as we made inroads into the Merchiston defence. However it was Merchiston who scored the half’s first try. Putting width on the ball out to one of their 2 flyers we were simply outflanked. At this stage the match could easily have run away from us, but St. Marys staged an excellent fightback. Firstly, Torquil H fed Fergus Y who then had a great run up the left touchline and outpaced any cover to score in the corner. Then Robbie L from a Rory C pass drove with determination through the Merchiston defence to make it 2-4. Some slack tackling from St. Marys allowed a 5th to be added for Merchiston. Then a barnstorming run from Isaac B almost saw him score, but as 2 defenders hung onto him he offloaded beautifully to the supporting Jack H who touched down in the corner ( his 1st competitive try!). Merchiston struck back after some good offloading out of the tackle, and on the final whistle Robbie L scored our 4th after a great sweeping run on the left. Final score 4-6.

First match under the belt, and although a defeat it was pleasing the boys showed some grit to come back in the 2nd half as the match slipped from us. Next week no match, but we look forward to the following week.
