1st XV v Merchiston Castle School

On Wednesday afternoon, the St. Mary's 1st XV opened their season's account with a really encouraging performance against circuit heavyweights Merchiston Castle School. The sides had met at last week's Merchiston Festival and had been separated by just a single score. We therefore expected a very tight encounter.

We fielded our strongest available team with Archie J and George either wide of Geordie in the front row. Ted and Jake started at second row with the combative Archie Mo at No.8. Caelan and Thomas were the halfbacks with Mac and Ollie E in the centres. Callum was at fullback and John and Ollie F filled the wing slots. It was evident from the start that both teams were very finely matched.

Merchiston opened the scoring before adding a second. St. Mary's did not panic and soon pulled back two scores through Archie Mo and John. Merchiston responded with a third against the run of play before superb hands put Ollie F clear down the right to bring St. Mary's back to within two points at half-time.

Half-time score: St. Mary's School 17 - 19 Merchiston Castle School

St. Mary's started the second half the way that they had dominated the first with swift rucking and savage tackling leading to pressure and turnovers. Archie Mo scored a second cracking try to put the home side ahead for the first time. Unfortunately, the performance dropped a little after that point and Merchiston were able to draw level again before pulling away in the last five minutes.

Regardless of the final result it had been, in the first half, a superb display of linked up running rugby by St. Mary's. We just have to learn how to keep things consistent and tight when the legs start to tire.

Well done boys!
