1st VIII hockey v Gala Academy

Wednesday 12th September

The squad: Hannah C (captain), Anna M (GK), Molly S (RD), Amelie G (LD), Lara J (RM), Eliza M (CM), Rosie P (LM) & Mhairi B (CF)

Once again we were delighted to welcome Gala Academy to Tweedbank for our opening game of the season. There is always a degree of uncertainty before taking to the pitch for the first time; would the girls remember all the hard work from seasons past? Would the new squad work well together? How would their fitness prevail? However, my anxieties were soon put to bed!

I was thrilled with the hockey I saw this afternoon from this small squad of girls. Utterly determined, they all worked tirelessly and had clearly listened intently to instructions. It wasn't long before Hannah found herself in space in the GA circle and fired home the opening goal of the afternoon. A second soon followed, again courtesy of a Hannah strike. Gala then started to settle and some skilful play saw them make inroads towards Anna and her goal. Molly and Amelie however clearly had other thoughts and they were very effective in snuffing out every Gala attack. Mhairi sprung up on the far post at the right time to fire home our third and a bit of a goal mouth scramble saw Mhairi claim her second of the day. These weren't against the run of play but came at a good time, just as the Gala girls were beginning to string passes together. There was no scrambling however for Mhairi's third goal. The ball was worked beautifully from the back and I think touched the sticks of every girl in the team, before being crossed by Rosie to Mhairi who was waiting on the edge of the D. She assumed the ideal position, timed the ball to perfection and found the bottom corner of the Gala goal, giving the GK no chance whatsoever of getting near the ball.

We swapped positions around a bit in the second half. Amelie (who was playing her second game of the afternoon) and Molly starred up front and straight away some tremendous link up between them and Eliza in the midfield, nearly paid dividends. Lara made a great run into the D and was the first to get to a loose ball and made no mistake in grabbing her opportunity. I awarded the girls a short corner soon afterwards and I was thrilled to see the moves we had devised only minutes before the game started, work perfectly and Rosie thundered home her first goal of the season. (I cannot remember another season when we have scored from the very first short corner awarded!?)

There were only a few minutes remaining after Rosie's goal but the girls continued to pass the ball nicely and make excellent use of the pitch. I was delighted with their performance this afternoon and they looked strong in all areas of the pitch. Very well done to all of you.

Next week we travel to Kilgraston for a 2.30pm start.
