The squad: Lucy M (captain), Emma L (GK), Mia H (RD), Megan Brown (LD), Willa H (RM), Harriet C (LM), Libby R (RF), Amelie G (LF)

What a fantastic game to get the new season off and running. Played between two very balanced sides, the game ebbed and flowed and on reflection, a draw was a very fair result.

From the outset, Lucy and her team got stuck in! Every loose ball was pounced upon and at no stage did the Heriot's girls get time or space on the ball. Emma, in goal saw plenty of ball in the first half, as did Mia and Megan in defence. Emma made a number of excellent saves and undoubtedly kept her team in the running. Megan and Mia were stoic and did a superb job of stopping wave after wave of Heriot attack. Lucy, Willa and Harriet held rank in the midfield; that crucial link role between attack and defence. They worked hard and had to as Heriot's were making life tricky. Libby and Amelie played upfront and they too made a number of superb runs with the ball, demonstrating good, close control.

It was about half way through the first half that we managed to break through the Heriot's defence. The move started at the back and the girls linked well, passed the ball around their opposition, the ball was threaded into the D where Lucy met it with aplomb; a tremendous strike that thudded resoundingly against the back of the goal.

We went into half time a goal to the good and it stayed that way well into the second half. We continued to pressurise the Heriot's goal but our visitors also continued to mount pressure. They scored the equaliser following a prolonged period of pressure but in true St. Mary's spirit, the girls bounced straight back and so nearly took the lead again. Alas, it wasn't to be and perhaps a draw was a fair result; it was certainly a true reflection of the game.

Congratulations to all the girls for making such a positive start to their season.
